چکیده

In this article, we present satellite data analysis of atmospheric Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) from volcanic eruptions and anthropogenic activities. Data from Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) on board ERS-2 for the years 1996 to 2002 is analyzed using a DOAS based algorithm with the aim of retrieving SO2 Slant Column Densities (SCDs). Difficulties in the retrieval of SO2 SCDs due to instrumental effects are investigated in detail and significantly improved. The retrieved SCDs can be used to identify and monitor several volcanic eruptions. A brief introduction of different volcanic eruptions around the globe is presented Also informations about the anthropogenic SO2 emissions can be easily achieved from the retrieved data set. A time series of anthropogenic SO2 emissions over Eastern Europe is presented in this study. The time series showed high SO2 SCDs over Eastern Europe during the winter months. The results demonstrate a high sensitivity of GOME instrument towards SO2 emissions.

Satellite-based global volcanic SO2 emissions and sulfate direct radiative forcing during 2005–2012

An 8 year volcanic SO2 emission inventory for 2005–2012 is obtained based on satellite measurements of SO2 from OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) and ancillary information from the Global Volcanism Program. It includes contributions from global volcanic eruptions and from eight persistently degassing volcanoes in the tropics. It shows significant differences in the estimate of SO2 amount and in...

Stratospheric sulfur and its implications for radiative forcing simulated by the chemistry climate model EMAC

Multiyear simulations with the atmospheric chemistry general circulation model EMAC with a microphysical modal aerosol module at high vertical resolution demonstrate that the sulfur gases COS and SO2, the latter from low-latitude and midlatitude volcanic eruptions, predominantly control the formation of stratospheric aerosol. Marine dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and other SO2 sources, including strong...

Volcanic SO2 fluxes derived from satellite data: a survey using OMI, GOME-2, IASI and MODIS

Sulphur dioxide (SO2) fluxes of active degassing volcanoes are routinely measured with ground-based equipment to characterize and monitor volcanic activity. SO2 of unmonitored volcanoes or from explosive volcanic eruptions, can be measured with satellites. However, remote-sensing methods based on absorption spectroscopy generally provide integrated amounts of already dispersed plumes of SO2 and...

Impact of atmospheric water vapor on the thermal infrared remote sensing of volcanic sulfur dioxide emissions: A case study from the Pu'u 'O'o vent of Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii

The December 18, 1999, launch of NASA’s Terra satellite put two multispectral thermal infrared imaging instruments into Earth orbit. Experiments with airborne instruments have demonstrated that the data from such instruments can be used to detect volcanic SO2 plumes and clouds. However, one of the greatest challenges that will confront efforts to monitor volcanic SO2 emissions from space is the...
